How to know if you have prostate issues
Men over 50 and those with a history of prostate cancer in their family should be screened regularly by their doctor. A simple blood test called PSA can detect an enlarged prostate. It can also indicate if there is a risk of developing cancer or other medical problems that may need treatment.
If you believe that your doctor has diagnosed you with a prostate condition, they will ask about your symptoms. Tell them how long they have been going on. They will ask you about any pain or burning you have when you urinate, and whether you’ve noticed any changes in your urine. They may recommend that you undergo a digital rectal examination (DRE), which involves placing a lubricated and gloved finger on your prostate from within your rectum. This takes between 10-15 seconds.
Prostate Problems Symptoms
The prostate is a walnut sized gland located in the lower urinary system, both in front and in back of the penis. It produces semen which is used for the production sperm. BPH, or benign prostatic hyperplasia, is the most common problem with the prostate. This occurs when it enlarges to the point that it interferes in urine flow. Other symptoms of BPH include painful urination. A weak flow of urine and hesitancy. Some men with BPH experience fecal (or bowel) incontinence. A more serious symptom is the inability to urinate, which is a medical issue.
Medicine for Prostate Issues
Many different medicines can be used to treat prostate problems. They can be liquids or pills, or tablets or liquids in a suppository. The liquid is passed into your bladder through the penis. Saw palmetto is a common medication. It can be purchased in liquid extract or as a herbal supplement. These medications may be used in combination or alone, depending upon your doctor’s recommendation.
Surgery for Prostate Disorders
Surgery may be an option if lifestyle changes and medications do not improve your symptoms. This could be done in your GP’s surgery or by a urologist at a hospital. Your doctor or specialist will discuss the pros and cons of each type surgery so that you can choose what is right for you. They will also discuss any other options available, including regular checkups with a urologist or your GP.
The good news is BPH and most other prostate issues are not cancerous. But that doesn’t mean they can be ignored. It is important to continue your regular visits with your GP as well as your PSA/DRE tests. These tests can be used to detect cancer or other conditions early on. If the disease is detected early on, treatments are available that can save a life. This is particularly true of prostate cancer, which is usually treatable if it’s caught before it becomes advanced.
