How to Know if you have prostate problems
Men over 50 and those with a history of prostate cancer in their family should be screened regularly by their doctor. A simple blood test, called PSA, can detect an enlarged prostrate. It can also show if there’s a chance of developing cancer or any other medical issues that require treatment.
If you believe that your doctor has diagnosed you with a prostate condition, they will ask about your symptoms. Tell them how long they have been going on. They will ask you about any pain or burning you have when you urinate, and whether you’ve noticed any changes in your urine. They may recommend a DRE, where a finger with lubricant and gloves is placed inside your rectum on the prostate. This takes between 10-15 seconds.
Prostate problems symptoms
The prostate is a walnut-sized gland found in the lower urinary tract, in the front and back of the penis. It produces semen which is used for the production sperm. BPH, or benign prostatic hyperplasia, is the most common problem with the prostate. This occurs when it enlarges to the point that it interferes in urine flow. Other symptoms are painful urination or a weak urine stream, as well as hesitancy, or stopping midstream. Fecal incontinence, also known as bowel incontinence, is another symptom that some men with BPH may experience. Not being able to urinate is a more severe symptom.
Medicine for Prostate Problems
There are a variety of medicines that can help with prostate issues. They can be liquids or pills, or tablets or liquids in a suppository. The liquid is then passed through the penis into your bladder. Saw palmetto can be purchased as a herbal extract or in pill form. These medications can be taken alone or in combination, depending on the advice of your doctor.
Surgery for Prostate Problems
Surgery may be an option if lifestyle changes and medications do not improve your symptoms. This can be done by your GP or a urologist in a hospital. Your doctor or specialist nurse will talk to you about the advantages and disadvantages of each type of surgery, so you can decide what is best for you. They will also explain other options, such as regular check-ups at your GP’s office or with a urologist in the hospital.
The good news is that BPH, and most other prostate problems, aren’t a sign of cancer. But that does not mean they should be ignored. You should continue to visit your GP regularly and have your PSA and DRE tested. These tests can help detect cancer or other serious conditions early. If the disease is caught early, treatments can save lives. This is true in particular of prostate cancer. If caught early, it is usually treatable.
