How to know if you have prostate issues
Men who are older or have a family history should visit their doctor regularly for a screening. A simple blood test called PSA can detect an enlarged prostate. It can also tell you if you are at risk of developing cancer, or if other medical conditions may require treatment.
If your doctor believes you have a prostate problem they will want to hear all about your symptoms and how long they’ve been happening. They will ask if you experience any pain or burning when you urinate. Also, if you’ve noticed changes in your urine. They may recommend that you undergo a digital rectal examination (DRE), which involves placing a lubricated and gloved finger on your prostate from within your rectum. This takes around 10-15 seconds.
Prostate problems can be characterized by a variety of symptoms
The prostate is an almond-sized gland that can be found in the lower urethra, at the front and the back of the genital penis. The prostate is responsible for producing the semen that is used to produce sperm. BPH is the most common prostate condition. It occurs when the prostate grows and interferes with the flow of urine. Other symptoms are painful urination or a weak urine stream, as well as hesitancy, or stopping midstream. Fecal incontinence is another symptom of BPH. Not being able to urinate is a more severe symptom.
Medicine for Prostate Issues
Many different medicines can be used to treat prostate problems. These can be pills or tablets, or they can be in the form of liquids that are put into a suppository. The liquid is passed into your bladder through the penis. A common medication is saw palmetto, which can be bought as a herbal supplement in pill form or in a liquid extract. These medications can be taken alone or in combination, depending on the advice of your doctor.
Surgery for Prostate Problems
Surgery might be an effective option if lifestyle modifications and medicines fail to improve your symptoms. This could be done at your GP’s office or by a specialist urologist. Your doctor or specialist will discuss the pros and cons of each type surgery so that you can choose what is right for you. They will also explain any other options that are available, such as having regular check-ups with your GP or with a urologist at the hospital.
The good news is BPH and most other prostate issues are not cancerous. But that doesn’t make them go away. You should continue to visit your GP regularly and have your PSA and DRE tested. These can be the best way of detecting cancer or other conditions before they become serious. If the disease is detected early on, treatments are available that can save a life. This is especially true of prostate carcinoma, which can be treated if caught before it progresses.
