How to Know If you have Prostate Problems
Men who are older or have a family history should visit their doctor regularly for a screening. A simple blood test called PSA can detect an enlarged prostate. It can also indicate whether there is a high risk of cancer or other medical problems which may require treatment.
If your doctor believes you have a prostate problem they will want to hear all about your symptoms and how long they’ve been happening. You’ll be asked if there is any burning or pain when you urinate. They may also ask if your urine has changed. They may recommend that you undergo a digital rectal examination (DRE), which involves placing a lubricated and gloved finger on your prostate from within your rectum. This takes around 10-15 seconds.
Symptoms of Prostate Problems
The prostate is an almond-sized gland that can be found in the lower urethra, at the front and the back of the genital penis. It’s responsible for producing semen, which is used in the production of sperm. BPH (benign prostatic hyperplasia) is the most prevalent prostate problem. This occurs when prostate enlarges, causing it to interfere with urine flow. Other symptoms include painful or difficult urination and a weak urine flow. Fecal incontinence is another symptom of BPH. A more serious symptom of the prostate is not being able to urinate at all, which is a medical emergency.
Medicine for Prostate Problems
Many different medicines can be used to treat prostate problems. These can be pills or tablets, or they can be in the form of liquids that are put into a suppository. The liquid then passes into the bladder via your penis. Saw palmetto comes in both liquid extract and herbal supplements. These medications may be used in combination or alone, depending upon your doctor’s recommendation.
Surgery for Prostate Disorders
Surgery might be an effective option if lifestyle modifications and medicines fail to improve your symptoms. This could be done in your GP’s surgery or by a urologist at a hospital. Your doctor or specialist nurse will talk to you about the advantages and disadvantages of each type of surgery, so you can decide what is best for you. They will also explain other options, such as regular check-ups at your GP’s office or with a urologist in the hospital.
The good news is that BPH, and most other prostate problems, aren’t a sign of cancer. This doesn’t mean that they can be ignored. You should continue to visit your GP regularly and have your PSA and DRE tested. These tests are the best way to detect cancer and other conditions before they get serious. Early detection of the disease can save lives. This is especially true of prostate carcinoma, which can be treated if caught before it progresses.
