How to Know if you have prostate problems

Men over 50 and those with a history of prostate cancer in their family should be screened regularly by their doctor. A simple blood test, called PSA, can detect an enlarged prostrate. It can also indicate whether there is a high risk of cancer or other medical problems which may require treatment.

If your doctor suspects you have a problem with your prostate, they will want to know all about your symptoms. They will also want to know how long these symptoms have been occurring. You will be asked about any pain you feel when you urinate and if you have noticed any changes to your urine. They may recommend a digital rectal exam (DRE), where a gloved and lubricated finger is placed on the prostate from inside your rectum. This procedure takes approximately 10-15 seconds.

Prostate problems symptoms

The prostate is a walnut sized gland located in the lower urinary system, both in front and in back of the penis. The prostate is responsible for producing the semen that is used to produce sperm. BPH (benign prostatic hyperplasia) is the most prevalent prostate problem. This occurs when prostate enlarges, causing it to interfere with urine flow. Other symptoms are painful urination or a weak urine stream, as well as hesitancy, or stopping midstream. Fecal incontinence, also known as bowel incontinence, is another symptom that some men with BPH may experience. A more serious symptom is the inability to urinate, which is a medical issue.

Medicine for Prostate Issues

There are several different medicines available to help treat prostate problems. These can be pills or tablets, or they can be in the form of liquids that are put into a suppository. The liquid is then passed into the bladder through your penis. Saw palmetto can be purchased as a herbal extract or in pill form. These medications can either be taken by themselves or in combination with other medications, according to your doctor.

Surgery for Prostate Disorders

Surgery may be an option if lifestyle changes and medications do not improve your symptoms. This could be done in your GP’s surgery or by a urologist at a hospital. Your doctor or specialist will discuss the pros and cons of each type surgery so that you can choose what is right for you. They will explain to you any other options such as regular checkups by your GP or a urologist.

The good news is BPH and most other prostate issues are not cancerous. But that doesn’t mean they can be ignored. It’s important to keep up with your regular visits to the GP, as well as having your PSA and DRE tests. These tests can be used to detect cancer or other conditions early on. And if the disease is detected early, there are treatments that can save lives. This is especially true of prostate carcinoma, which can be treated if caught before it progresses.
