How to Know If you have Prostate Problems
Men over 50 and those with a history of prostate cancer in their family should be screened regularly by their doctor. A simple blood test, called PSA, can detect an enlarged prostrate. It can also show if there’s a chance of developing cancer or any other medical issues that require treatment.
If you believe that your doctor has diagnosed you with a prostate condition, they will ask about your symptoms. Tell them how long they have been going on. They will ask you about any pain or burning you have when you urinate, and whether you’ve noticed any changes in your urine. They may recommend a DRE, where a finger with lubricant and gloves is placed inside your rectum on the prostate. This takes about 10-15 seconds.
Prostate problems can be characterized by a variety of symptoms
The prostate is an almond-sized gland that can be found in the lower urethra, at the front and the back of the genital penis. The prostate is responsible for producing the semen that is used to produce sperm. BPH (benign prostatic hyperplasia) is the most prevalent prostate problem. This occurs when prostate enlarges, causing it to interfere with urine flow. Other symptoms include painful urination, a weak flow of urine, and hesitancy or stopping midstream. Fecal incontinence is another symptom of BPH. A more serious symptom is the inability to urinate, which is a medical issue.
Medicine for Prostate Issues
There are a variety of medicines that can help with prostate issues. These can be pills or tablets, or they can be in the form of liquids that are put into a suppository. The liquid then passes into the bladder via your penis. Saw palmetto comes in both liquid extract and herbal supplements. These medications can either be taken by themselves or in combination with other medications, according to your doctor.
Surgery for Prostate Disorders
Surgery might be an effective option if lifestyle modifications and medicines fail to improve your symptoms. This can be done by your GP or a urologist in a hospital. Your doctor will explain to you the pros and con of each surgery type so that you can decide which is best for your needs. They will also discuss any other options available, including regular checkups with a urologist or your GP.
The good news is BPH and most other prostate issues are not cancerous. But that does not mean they should be ignored. It’s important to keep up with your regular visits to the GP, as well as having your PSA and DRE tests. These tests can help detect cancer or other serious conditions early. If the disease is detected early on, treatments are available that can save a life. This is especially true of prostate carcinoma, which can be treated if caught before it progresses.
