How to know if you have prostate issues
Men who are older or have a family history should visit their doctor regularly for a screening. A simple blood test called PSA can detect an enlarged prostate. It can also indicate whether there is a high risk of cancer or other medical problems which may require treatment.
If you believe that your doctor has diagnosed you with a prostate condition, they will ask about your symptoms. Tell them how long they have been going on. You’ll be asked if there is any burning or pain when you urinate. They may also ask if your urine has changed. A digital rectal (DRE) may be recommended, in which a finger is placed on your prostate with a lubricated glove from inside your rectum. This takes around 10-15 seconds.
Symptoms of Prostate Problems
The prostate is a walnut-sized gland found in the lower urinary tract, in the front and back of the penis. It produces semen which is used for the production sperm. BPH, or benign prostatic hyperplasia, is the most common problem with the prostate. This occurs when it enlarges to the point that it interferes in urine flow. Other symptoms include painful or difficult urination and a weak urine flow. Some men with BPH also experience a loss of bowel control, which is known as fecal incontinence. A more serious symptom of the prostate is not being able to urinate at all, which is a medical emergency.
Medicine for Prostate Disorders
There are several different medicines available to help treat prostate problems. They can be liquids or pills, or tablets or liquids in a suppository. The liquid then passes into the bladder via your penis. Saw palmetto comes in both liquid extract and herbal supplements. These medications can be used alone or in combination with others, depending on your doctor’s advice.
Surgery for Prostate Problems
If lifestyle changes or medicines do not improve symptoms, surgery may be an alternative. This could be done at your GP’s office or by a specialist urologist. Your doctor or specialist will discuss the pros and cons of each type surgery so that you can choose what is right for you. They will explain to you any other options such as regular checkups by your GP or a urologist.
The good thing is that BPH and other prostate problems are not a sign of a cancer. This doesn’t mean that they can be ignored. It is important to continue your regular visits with your GP as well as your PSA/DRE tests. These tests can be used to detect cancer or other conditions early on. If the disease is detected early on, treatments are available that can save a life. This is true in particular of prostate cancer. If caught early, it is usually treatable.
