How to Know If you have Prostate Problems
Men who are older or have a family history should visit their doctor regularly for a screening. A simple blood test, called PSA, can detect an enlarged prostrate. It can also indicate if there is a risk of developing cancer or other medical problems that may need treatment.
If your doctor suspects you have a problem with your prostate, they will want to know all about your symptoms. They will also want to know how long these symptoms have been occurring. They will ask you about any pain or burning you have when you urinate, and whether you’ve noticed any changes in your urine. They may recommend a DRE, where a finger with lubricant and gloves is placed inside your rectum on the prostate. This procedure takes approximately 10-15 seconds.
Prostate Problems Symptoms
The prostate is a walnut sized gland located in the lower urinary system, both in front and in back of the penis. It produces semen which is used for the production sperm. The most common prostate problem is benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), which occurs when the prostate enlarges and interferes with urine flow. Other symptoms of BPH include painful urination. A weak flow of urine and hesitancy. Some men with BPH also experience a loss of bowel control, which is known as fecal incontinence. Not being able to urinate is a more severe symptom.
Medicine for Prostate Disorders
There are several different medicines available to help treat prostate problems. They can be liquids or pills, or tablets or liquids in a suppository. The liquid then passes into the bladder via your penis. Saw palmetto can be purchased as a herbal extract or in pill form. These medications can either be taken by themselves or in combination with other medications, according to your doctor.
Surgery for Prostate Problems
If lifestyle changes and medicines don’t improve your symptoms, surgery might be an option. The surgery could be performed by your GP at their office or by an urologist at the hospital. Your doctor will explain to you the pros and con of each surgery type so that you can decide which is best for your needs. They will also explain any other options that are available, such as having regular check-ups with your GP or with a urologist at the hospital.
The good news is that BPH, and most other prostate problems, aren’t a sign of cancer. But that does not mean they should be ignored. It is important to continue your regular visits with your GP as well as your PSA/DRE tests. These tests are the best way to detect cancer and other conditions before they get serious. And if the disease is detected early, there are treatments that can save lives. This is especially true of prostate carcinoma, which can be treated if caught before it progresses.
