How to Know if you have prostate problems
Men with a family background of prostate cancer and older men should see their doctor to have regular screenings. A simple blood test, called PSA, can detect an enlarged prostrate. It can also tell you if you are at risk of developing cancer, or if other medical conditions may require treatment.
If your doctor believes you have a prostate problem they will want to hear all about your symptoms and how long they’ve been happening. They will ask if you experience any pain or burning when you urinate. Also, if you’ve noticed changes in your urine. They may recommend a DRE, where a finger with lubricant and gloves is placed inside your rectum on the prostate. This takes around 10-15 seconds.
Prostate problems symptoms
The prostate, a walnut-sized organ, is located in the lower tract of the urinary system. It can be found on the front or back of penis. It’s responsible for producing semen, which is used in the production of sperm. BPH is the most common prostate condition. It occurs when the prostate grows and interferes with the flow of urine. Other symptoms are painful urination or a weak urine stream, as well as hesitancy, or stopping midstream. Fecal incontinence, also known as bowel incontinence, is another symptom that some men with BPH may experience. Not being able to urinate is a more severe symptom.
Medicine for Prostate Disorders
Many different medicines can be used to treat prostate problems. They can be liquids or pills, or tablets or liquids in a suppository. The liquid then passes into the bladder via your penis. Saw palmetto is a common medication. It can be purchased in liquid extract or as a herbal supplement. These medications can be taken alone or in combination, depending on the advice of your doctor.
Surgery for Prostate Issues
Surgery may be an option if lifestyle changes and medications do not improve your symptoms. This could be done at your GP’s office or by a specialist urologist. Your doctor or specialist nurse will talk to you about the advantages and disadvantages of each type of surgery, so you can decide what is best for you. They will explain to you any other options such as regular checkups by your GP or a urologist.
The good news is BPH and most other prostate issues are not cancerous. But that doesn’t mean they can be ignored. You should continue to visit your GP regularly and have your PSA and DRE tested. These tests are the best way to detect cancer and other conditions before they get serious. If the disease is caught early, treatments can save lives. This is especially true for prostate cancer. It is usually treatable when caught before it has advanced.
