How to Know If you have Prostate Problems

Men over 50 and those with a history of prostate cancer in their family should be screened regularly by their doctor. A simple blood test called PSA can detect an enlarged prostate. It can also tell you if you are at risk of developing cancer, or if other medical conditions may require treatment.

If your doctor believes you have a prostate problem they will want to hear all about your symptoms and how long they’ve been happening. You will be asked about any pain you feel when you urinate and if you have noticed any changes to your urine. They may recommend a digital rectal exam (DRE), where a gloved and lubricated finger is placed on the prostate from inside your rectum. This procedure takes approximately 10-15 seconds.

Symptoms of Prostate Problems

The prostate is an almond-sized gland that can be found in the lower urethra, at the front and the back of the genital penis. The prostate is responsible for producing the semen that is used to produce sperm. The most common prostate problem is benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), which occurs when the prostate enlarges and interferes with urine flow. Other symptoms include painful or difficult urination and a weak urine flow. Fecal incontinence, also known as bowel incontinence, is another symptom that some men with BPH may experience. Not being able to urinate is a more severe symptom.

Medicine for Prostate Issues

Many different medicines can be used to treat prostate problems. These can be pills or tablets, or they can be in the form of liquids that are put into a suppository. The liquid is then passed into the bladder through your penis. Saw palmetto comes in both liquid extract and herbal supplements. These medications can be taken alone or in combination, depending on the advice of your doctor.

Surgery for Prostate Disorders

Surgery might be an effective option if lifestyle modifications and medicines fail to improve your symptoms. This could be done at your GP’s office or by a specialist urologist. Your doctor or specialist will discuss the pros and cons of each type surgery so that you can choose what is right for you. They will also explain other options, such as regular check-ups at your GP’s office or with a urologist in the hospital.

The good news is that BPH, and most other prostate problems, aren’t a sign of cancer. But that doesn’t mean they can be ignored. It is important to continue your regular visits with your GP as well as your PSA/DRE tests. These can be the best way of detecting cancer or other conditions before they become serious. If the disease is detected early on, treatments are available that can save a life. This is true in particular of prostate cancer. If caught early, it is usually treatable.
