How to know if you have prostate issues
Men with a family background of prostate cancer and older men should see their doctor to have regular screenings. A simple blood test, called PSA, can detect an enlarged prostrate. It can also indicate whether there is a high risk of cancer or other medical problems which may require treatment.
If your doctor believes you have a prostate problem they will want to hear all about your symptoms and how long they’ve been happening. They will ask you about any pain or burning you have when you urinate, and whether you’ve noticed any changes in your urine. They may recommend that you undergo a digital rectal examination (DRE), which involves placing a lubricated and gloved finger on your prostate from within your rectum. This takes about 10-15 seconds.
Prostate Problems Symptoms
The prostate is a walnut-sized gland found in the lower urinary tract, in the front and back of the penis. It is responsible for the production of semen, which in turn is used to make sperm. The most common prostate problem is benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), which occurs when the prostate enlarges and interferes with urine flow. Other symptoms are painful urination or a weak urine stream, as well as hesitancy, or stopping midstream. Some men with BPH also experience a loss of bowel control, which is known as fecal incontinence. The prostate can cause a more serious symptom, such as not being able urinate. This is a medical crisis.
There are several different medicines available to help treat prostate problems. They can come in the form or tablets or liquids, which are then put into a suppository. The liquid is then passed through the penis into your bladder. A common medication is saw palmetto, which can be bought as a herbal supplement in pill form or in a liquid extract. These medications may be used in combination or alone, depending upon your doctor’s recommendation.
Surgery for Prostate Issues
If lifestyle changes or medicines do not improve symptoms, surgery may be an alternative. The surgery could be performed by your GP at their office or by an urologist at the hospital. Your doctor or nurse specialist will explain the pros and cons of different types of surgery to you so you can make an informed decision. They will also discuss any other options available, including regular checkups with a urologist or your GP.
The good news about BPH is that it’s not a cancer sign. This doesn’t mean that they can be ignored. You should continue to visit your GP regularly and have your PSA and DRE tested. These tests are the best way to detect cancer and other conditions before they get serious. Early detection of the disease can save lives. This is particularly true of prostate cancer, which is usually treatable if it’s caught before it becomes advanced.
