How to Know If you have Prostate Problems
Men who are older or have a family history should visit their doctor regularly for a screening. A simple PSA blood test can detect an over-inflated prostate. It can also show if there’s a chance of developing cancer or any other medical issues that require treatment.
If you believe that your doctor has diagnosed you with a prostate condition, they will ask about your symptoms. Tell them how long they have been going on. You will be asked about any pain you feel when you urinate and if you have noticed any changes to your urine. They may recommend that you undergo a digital rectal examination (DRE), which involves placing a lubricated and gloved finger on your prostate from within your rectum. This takes around 10-15 seconds.
Prostate problems symptoms
The prostate is a walnut-sized gland found in the lower urinary tract, in the front and back of the penis. It produces semen which is used for the production sperm. BPH is the most common prostate condition. It occurs when the prostate grows and interferes with the flow of urine. Other symptoms include painful or difficult urination and a weak urine flow. Some men with BPH experience fecal (or bowel) incontinence. The prostate can cause a more serious symptom, such as not being able urinate. This is a medical crisis.
Medicine for Prostate Issues
There are several different medicines available to help treat prostate problems. These medicines can be taken as pills or tablets, but they can also be liquids put into a supppository. The liquid is passed into your bladder through the penis. A common medication is saw palmetto, which can be bought as a herbal supplement in pill form or in a liquid extract. These medications can either be taken by themselves or in combination with other medications, according to your doctor.
Surgery for Prostate Problems
If lifestyle changes and medicines don’t improve your symptoms, surgery might be an option. The surgery could be performed by your GP at their office or by an urologist at the hospital. Your doctor or nurse specialist will explain the pros and cons of different types of surgery to you so you can make an informed decision. They will explain to you any other options such as regular checkups by your GP or a urologist.
The good news is that BPH, and most other prostate problems, aren’t a sign of cancer. But that doesn’t mean they can be ignored. It is important to continue your regular visits with your GP as well as your PSA/DRE tests. These tests are the best way to detect cancer and other conditions before they get serious. If the disease is detected early on, treatments are available that can save a life. This is particularly true of prostate cancer, which is usually treatable if it’s caught before it becomes advanced.
