How to know if you have prostate issues
Men who are older and those with a family history of prostate cancer should see their doctor for regular screening. A simple PSA blood test can detect an over-inflated prostate. It can also indicate whether there is a high risk of cancer or other medical problems which may require treatment.
If you believe that your doctor has diagnosed you with a prostate condition, they will ask about your symptoms. Tell them how long they have been going on. You will be asked about any pain you feel when you urinate and if you have noticed any changes to your urine. They may recommend a DRE, where a finger with lubricant and gloves is placed inside your rectum on the prostate. This takes between 10-15 seconds.
Prostate problems symptoms
The prostate is a walnut-sized gland found in the lower urinary tract, in the front and back of the penis. It produces semen which is used for the production sperm. BPH (benign prostatic hyperplasia) is the most prevalent prostate problem. This occurs when prostate enlarges, causing it to interfere with urine flow. Other symptoms of BPH include painful urination. A weak flow of urine and hesitancy. Some men with BPH also experience a loss of bowel control, which is known as fecal incontinence. The prostate can cause a more serious symptom, such as not being able urinate. This is a medical crisis.
Medicine for Prostate Disorders
There are a variety of medicines that can help with prostate issues. They can be liquids or pills, or tablets or liquids in a suppository. The liquid is passed into your bladder through the penis. A common medication is saw palmetto, which can be bought as a herbal supplement in pill form or in a liquid extract. These medications can be used alone or in combination with others, depending on your doctor’s advice.
Surgery for Prostate Problems
If lifestyle changes and medicines don’t improve your symptoms, surgery might be an option. This could be done in your GP’s surgery or by a urologist at a hospital. Your doctor will explain to you the pros and con of each surgery type so that you can decide which is best for your needs. They will also explain other options, such as regular check-ups at your GP’s office or with a urologist in the hospital.
The good thing is that BPH and other prostate problems are not a sign of a cancer. But that does not mean they should be ignored. You should continue to visit your GP regularly and have your PSA and DRE tested. These can be the best way of detecting cancer or other conditions before they become serious. And if the disease is detected early, there are treatments that can save lives. This is particularly true of prostate cancer, which is usually treatable if it’s caught before it becomes advanced.
