How to Know if you have prostate problems
Men who are older and those with a family history of prostate cancer should see their doctor for regular screening. A simple blood test called PSA can detect an enlarged prostate. It can also indicate whether there is a high risk of cancer or other medical problems which may require treatment.
If you believe that your doctor has diagnosed you with a prostate condition, they will ask about your symptoms. Tell them how long they have been going on. You’ll be asked if there is any burning or pain when you urinate. They may also ask if your urine has changed. They may recommend a DRE, where a finger with lubricant and gloves is placed inside your rectum on the prostate. This takes around 10-15 seconds.
Prostate problems symptoms
The prostate is a walnut sized gland located in the lower urinary system, both in front and in back of the penis. It is responsible for the production of semen, which in turn is used to make sperm. BPH (benign prostatic hyperplasia) is the most prevalent prostate problem. This occurs when prostate enlarges, causing it to interfere with urine flow. Other symptoms of BPH include painful urination. A weak flow of urine and hesitancy. Fecal incontinence is another symptom of BPH. A more serious symptom is the inability to urinate, which is a medical issue.
Medicine for Prostate Disorders
Many different medicines can be used to treat prostate problems. They can be liquids or pills, or tablets or liquids in a suppository. The liquid then passes into the bladder via your penis. Saw palmetto can be purchased as a herbal extract or in pill form. These medications can be used alone or in combination with others, depending on your doctor’s advice.
Surgery for Prostate Problems
Surgery might be an effective option if lifestyle modifications and medicines fail to improve your symptoms. This could be done in your GP’s surgery or by a urologist at a hospital. Your doctor or specialist nurse will talk to you about the advantages and disadvantages of each type of surgery, so you can decide what is best for you. They will also explain any other options that are available, such as having regular check-ups with your GP or with a urologist at the hospital.
The good news is that BPH, and most other prostate problems, aren’t a sign of cancer. But that doesn’t mean they can be ignored. You should continue to visit your GP regularly and have your PSA and DRE tested. These can be the best way of detecting cancer or other conditions before they become serious. If the disease is detected early on, treatments are available that can save a life. This is especially true of prostate carcinoma, which can be treated if caught before it progresses.
