How to Know if you have prostate problems

Men who are older and those with a family history of prostate cancer should see their doctor for regular screening. A simple blood test, called PSA, can detect an enlarged prostrate. It can also show if there’s a chance of developing cancer or any other medical issues that require treatment.

If your doctor believes you have a prostate problem they will want to hear all about your symptoms and how long they’ve been happening. You will be asked about any pain you feel when you urinate and if you have noticed any changes to your urine. A digital rectal (DRE) may be recommended, in which a finger is placed on your prostate with a lubricated glove from inside your rectum. This takes between 10-15 seconds.

Prostate Problems Symptoms

The prostate is a walnut sized gland located in the lower urinary system, both in front and in back of the penis. The prostate is responsible for producing the semen that is used to produce sperm. BPH is the most common prostate condition. It occurs when the prostate grows and interferes with the flow of urine. Other symptoms include painful or difficult urination and a weak urine flow. Fecal incontinence is another symptom of BPH. The prostate can cause a more serious symptom, such as not being able urinate. This is a medical crisis.

Medicine for Prostate Issues

Many different medicines can be used to treat prostate problems. These can be pills or tablets, or they can be in the form of liquids that are put into a suppository. The liquid is passed into your bladder through the penis. Saw palmetto is a common medication. It can be purchased in liquid extract or as a herbal supplement. These medications can be used alone or in combination with others, depending on your doctor’s advice.

Surgery for Prostate Problems

If lifestyle changes and medicines don’t improve your symptoms, surgery might be an option. This could be done at your GP’s office or by a specialist urologist. Your doctor will explain to you the pros and con of each surgery type so that you can decide which is best for your needs. They will also discuss any other options available, including regular checkups with a urologist or your GP.

The good news is that BPH, and most other prostate problems, aren’t a sign of cancer. But that doesn’t mean they can be ignored. It is important to continue your regular visits with your GP as well as your PSA/DRE tests. These tests can be used to detect cancer or other conditions early on. If the disease is caught early, treatments can save lives. This is particularly true of prostate cancer, which is usually treatable if it’s caught before it becomes advanced.
