How to know if you have prostate issues

Men who are older and those with a family history of prostate cancer should see their doctor for regular screening. A simple blood-test called PSA can detect a enlarged prostate. It can also show if there’s a chance of developing cancer or any other medical issues that require treatment.

If your doctor believes you have a prostate problem they will want to hear all about your symptoms and how long they’ve been happening. They will ask you about any pain or burning you have when you urinate, and whether you’ve noticed any changes in your urine. A digital rectal (DRE) may be recommended, in which a finger is placed on your prostate with a lubricated glove from inside your rectum. This takes between 10-15 seconds.

Prostate problems can be characterized by a variety of symptoms

The prostate is a walnut sized gland located in the lower urinary system, both in front and in back of the penis. It produces semen which is used for the production sperm. BPH, or benign prostatic hyperplasia, is the most common problem with the prostate. This occurs when it enlarges to the point that it interferes in urine flow. Other symptoms include painful or difficult urination and a weak urine flow. Some men with BPH experience fecal (or bowel) incontinence. A more serious symptom is the inability to urinate, which is a medical issue.

Medicine for Prostate Disorders

Many different medicines can be used to treat prostate problems. They can be liquids or pills, or tablets or liquids in a suppository. The liquid is then passed through the penis into your bladder. Saw palmetto comes in both liquid extract and herbal supplements. These medications can either be taken by themselves or in combination with other medications, according to your doctor.

Surgery for Prostate Problems

If lifestyle changes and medicines don’t improve your symptoms, surgery might be an option. The surgery could be performed by your GP at their office or by an urologist at the hospital. Your doctor or nurse specialist will explain the pros and cons of different types of surgery to you so you can make an informed decision. They will also discuss any other options available, including regular checkups with a urologist or your GP.

The good news is that BPH, and most other prostate problems, aren’t a sign of cancer. But that doesn’t make them go away. You should continue to visit your GP regularly and have your PSA and DRE tested. These can be the best way of detecting cancer or other conditions before they become serious. And if the disease is detected early, there are treatments that can save lives. This is especially true of prostate carcinoma, which can be treated if caught before it progresses.
