How to Know if you have prostate problems
Men over 50 and those with a history of prostate cancer in their family should be screened regularly by their doctor. A simple blood test called PSA can detect an enlarged prostate. It can also indicate if there is a risk of developing cancer or other medical problems that may need treatment.
If your doctor believes you have a prostate problem they will want to hear all about your symptoms and how long they’ve been happening. They will ask you about any pain or burning you have when you urinate, and whether you’ve noticed any changes in your urine. They may recommend that you undergo a digital rectal examination (DRE), which involves placing a lubricated and gloved finger on your prostate from within your rectum. This takes about 10-15 seconds.
Prostate problems symptoms
The prostate is a walnut sized gland located in the lower urinary system, both in front and in back of the penis. It produces semen which is used for the production sperm. BPH (benign prostatic hyperplasia) is the most prevalent prostate problem. This occurs when prostate enlarges, causing it to interfere with urine flow. Other symptoms include painful or difficult urination and a weak urine flow. Some men with BPH experience fecal (or bowel) incontinence. Not being able to urinate is a more severe symptom.
Medicine for Prostate Problems
There are a variety of medicines that can help with prostate issues. These can be pills or tablets, or they can be in the form of liquids that are put into a suppository. The liquid is passed into your bladder through the penis. A common medication is saw palmetto, which can be bought as a herbal supplement in pill form or in a liquid extract. These medications can be taken alone or in combination, depending on the advice of your doctor.
Surgery for Prostate Problems
Surgery might be an effective option if lifestyle modifications and medicines fail to improve your symptoms. This could be done in your GP’s surgery or by a urologist at a hospital. Your doctor or specialist nurse will talk to you about the advantages and disadvantages of each type of surgery, so you can decide what is best for you. They will also explain any other options that are available, such as having regular check-ups with your GP or with a urologist at the hospital.
The good news is BPH and most other prostate issues are not cancerous. But that doesn’t mean they can be ignored. It is important to continue your regular visits with your GP as well as your PSA/DRE tests. These tests are the best way to detect cancer and other conditions before they get serious. If the disease is caught early, treatments can save lives. This is especially true for prostate cancer. It is usually treatable when caught before it has advanced.
