How To Know If You Have Prostate Problems
Men with a family background of prostate cancer and older men should see their doctor to have regular screenings. A simple blood test called PSA can detect an enlarged prostate. It can also tell you if you are at risk of developing cancer, or if other medical conditions may require treatment.
If your doctor suspects you have a problem with your prostate, they will want to know all about your symptoms. They will also want to know how long these symptoms have been occurring. You’ll be asked if there is any burning or pain when you urinate. They may also ask if your urine has changed. They may recommend a DRE, where a finger with lubricant and gloves is placed inside your rectum on the prostate. This procedure takes approximately 10-15 seconds.
Prostate Problems Symptoms
The prostate is an almond-sized gland that can be found in the lower urethra, at the front and the back of the genital penis. It is responsible for the production of semen, which in turn is used to make sperm. The most common prostate problem is benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), which occurs when the prostate enlarges and interferes with urine flow. Other symptoms are painful urination or a weak urine stream, as well as hesitancy, or stopping midstream. Fecal incontinence, also known as bowel incontinence, is another symptom that some men with BPH may experience. Not being able to urinate is a more severe symptom.
Medicine for Prostate Issues
There are a variety of medicines that can help with prostate issues. They can be liquids or pills, or tablets or liquids in a suppository. The liquid then passes into the bladder via your penis. Saw palmetto is a common medication. It can be purchased in liquid extract or as a herbal supplement. These medications may be used in combination or alone, depending upon your doctor’s recommendation.
Surgery for Prostate Issues
If lifestyle changes or medicines do not improve symptoms, surgery may be an alternative. This could be done at your GP’s office or by a specialist urologist. Your doctor will explain to you the pros and con of each surgery type so that you can decide which is best for your needs. They will explain to you any other options such as regular checkups by your GP or a urologist.
The good thing is that BPH and other prostate problems are not a sign of a cancer. But that doesn’t make them go away. You should continue to visit your GP regularly and have your PSA and DRE tested. These can be the best way of detecting cancer or other conditions before they become serious. If the disease is caught early, treatments can save lives. This is particularly true of prostate cancer, which is usually treatable if it’s caught before it becomes advanced.
