How to know if you have prostate issues
Men over 50 and those with a history of prostate cancer in their family should be screened regularly by their doctor. A simple PSA blood test can detect an over-inflated prostate. It can also indicate whether there is a high risk of cancer or other medical problems which may require treatment.
If your doctor suspects that you have a prostatic problem, he will want to learn about all of your symptoms and the length of time they have been occurring. You will be asked about any pain you feel when you urinate and if you have noticed any changes to your urine. They may recommend a digital rectal exam (DRE), where a gloved and lubricated finger is placed on the prostate from inside your rectum. This procedure takes approximately 10-15 seconds.
Symptoms of Prostate Problems
The prostate is an almond-sized gland that can be found in the lower urethra, at the front and the back of the genital penis. It produces semen which is used for the production sperm. BPH, or benign prostatic hyperplasia, is the most common problem with the prostate. This occurs when it enlarges to the point that it interferes in urine flow. Other symptoms include painful or difficult urination and a weak urine flow. Fecal incontinence is another symptom of BPH. A more serious symptom is the inability to urinate, which is a medical issue.
Medicine for Prostate Issues
There are several different medicines available to help treat prostate problems. They can come in the form or tablets or liquids, which are then put into a suppository. The liquid is passed into your bladder through the penis. Saw palmetto comes in both liquid extract and herbal supplements. These medications can be taken alone or in combination, depending on the advice of your doctor.
Surgery for Prostate Problems
Surgery might be an effective option if lifestyle modifications and medicines fail to improve your symptoms. This can be done by your GP or a urologist in a hospital. Your doctor or nurse specialist will explain the pros and cons of different types of surgery to you so you can make an informed decision. They will also explain any other options that are available, such as having regular check-ups with your GP or with a urologist at the hospital.
The good thing is that BPH and other prostate problems are not a sign of a cancer. This doesn’t mean that they can be ignored. It is important to continue your regular visits with your GP as well as your PSA/DRE tests. These tests are the best way to detect cancer and other conditions before they get serious. Early detection of the disease can save lives. This is especially true of prostate carcinoma, which can be treated if caught before it progresses.
